The backdrop to this still life was the fabric of a rather nice old chaise in my rented New York apartment. It was painted on a piece of thin hardboard I managed to salvage which bent in my backpack on the return journey home. My dad tried to straighten it out on his knee and accidentally snapped off the bottom left corner. He was very apologetic. On the other hand I was delighted, glued the corner back and took it to the framers. The crack gives the painting a satisfying quality to me and an interesting memory of dad on one of my paintings.
